February Bloom Day

here is the deepest secret nobody knows.
here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;
which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide.
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart.
i carry your heart.
(i carry it in my heart.) ~
E. E. Cummings

It was an exceptional Valentine's weekend for our family, with the birth of a granddaughter Saturday morning. Even if it wasn't quite so eventful, I hope yours was lovely too.

No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn. - Hal Borland

I used to hate winter. As moments, weeks, seasons, years, decades pass, I like it more and more. Life is beautiful, whatever the season. As the old cliche' goes, it beats the alternative.

I wonder. How might we see a snowstorm if we knew it was our last? What if we knew this was our last winter, last month, last day, last moment on this beautiful earth? How might a sunrise, a starry night, a hug, good morning, good night, I love you, phone call to a dear one, hello and goodbye, be different if we knew it was our last? Every moment in life is a gift, whatever the weather.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. ~ Ecclesiastes 3: 1

Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content. ~ Helen Keller

Each of us makes his own weather, and determines the color
of the skies in the emotional universe he inhabits.
~ Bishop Fulton Sheen

If you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly those moments. ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh

  1. My husband is having surgery today, and will be in the hospital for a week or so afterwards. I may not be able to respond to comments or go blog visiting for at least the next few days or so.

    Oh Linda, our best wishes for your husband! May his surgery go flawlessly and his recovery be quick and complete. I was ready to comment on the joy of a granddaughter, something we are still waiting to experience. She is precious beyond measure and the elation in your voice shines through. The words of living each and every second to the fullest ring true. As my mother always used to say, "Life's too short". A big hug for you and yours, dear cousin. {{{{{U}}}}}}

  3. Lovely quotes, Linda! I'm trying to remember what movie I recently heard the first quote from...
    So much going on in your family...best energy to your husband!

  4. Hi Linda, the birth of a granddaughter would not only be eventful, but a MIRACLE for me, LOL! I've always loved winter, and snow, but increasingly find the gardening season too short in MI (looking at blooms on others' blogs starting now doesn't help, either!). Also, we don't always have enough snow. Harumph. I'm thinking of Lawn Man and wishing him well.

    It was a grueling day, but all went smoothly and Lawn Man is doing well, (except he would really like a cheeseburger and they won't let him. ;)

    I didn't see this post until today. I'm glad I didn't catch it when you originally posted it because I'm afraid I wouldn't have been able to appreciate the words within before this week.

    Thanks, Linda.

  22. Thank you all, for your good wishes for my husband's surgery and on the birth of my granddaughter. Glad you enjoyed some of my favorite quotes.

    I was someone who was always looking around the next bend in the road, and missing the moment I was in. Until a few years ago after developing a chronic illness. A lot of stuff converged at that time. To make a long story short a couple of the best things that came of that difficult time were learning to live in the moment, and appreciating some of the smallest things I used to take for granted.

    The thoughts I included in this post resonate deeply with me, and were in mind during my husband's recent surgery and recovery. They helped me through what might otherwise have been a much more stressful time.

    MBT, isn't it ironic. I've thought of these things more than usual with recent events - the birth of my granddaughter, my husband's surgery, and now, our dear Katie's medical crisis. One of the things I've admired most about Katie as I've gotten to know her through her writing, is her determination to live - I mean really live. I believe that determination, and the love, prayers, and energy of everyone who cares for her, even total strangers who are praying for her, holding her in their hearts, sending her all the positive energy they can muster, will carry her through this and back to us.
