A Victory Garden on the White House Lawn

The Garden of Eatin': A Short History of America's Garden from roger doiron on Vimeo.

On January 16th, Change.org will present the incoming Obama administration with the top ten ideas for change in America as chosen by votes on their site.

Planting an organic Victory Garden on the White House lawn as an example for all Americans in more sustainable living is currently in 25th place, and needs over 2,000 more votes to make the cut. Voting ends next Thursday, January 15 at 5:00 p.m. eastern time. If you haven't already, I hope you'll consider voting. There are many other worthy causes worth voting for, and each voter gets to choose their top ten favorites.

  1. LInda,

Thanks Linda for posting the link and video...I loved Change.org and the ideas for change are fantastic...There were more then 10 that I wanted to vote for! I do hope that Mr Obama can foster a new way of thinking about issues in this country.

So our love affair with cars, trucks and oil is really at the heart of so many of our food problems;-)

What an educational & entertaining video. Thanks for the link. I hope their cause pays off and the next President leads the nation by example with a victory garden on the Whitehouse lawn. :)

  6. My pleasure Gail. I agree - it's hard to narrow the choices down to only ten.

I guess you could say the love of oil is the root of many evils!

Thank you Carolyn! I hope so!

Hi Racquel, glad you enjoyed the video! My fingers are crossed!

    Excellent Jill!

    Thanks Tina!

  7. This is another story I've been following with great fascination. I hope that the Obamas do indeed go for a victory garden. I can see the girls in particular embracing such a fun project (get 'em while they're young and they are gardeners for life. It's how I started...)

It would be cool but would the SS tackle you down next to the cantaloupes if you snuck in to steal some seeds?

    :0)

  9. What a clever video, Linda, and I learned some interesting info, as well! This summer I read a newspaper article that explained the process of getting vegetables from a truck farm in California to the grocery store. I think it took at least a week. At the same time I was picking green beans from my vegetable garden that made it to the table in an hour or less. Victory gardens DO make sense in the 21st century!

  10. Hi Linda,

Great video and an excellent idea. All of us ought to have a plot where we grow the fruit and vegetable the household needs.
To eat local grown food makes sense. It is vital that we all do our best in this important issue.

  11. Linda, I live just below DC, I could drive to the White House in 20-30 minutes. It is a great idea to plant a garden and I can go up there and knock on the door to make sure they follow thru, ok?:)
    Well, I'll go vote, first.
Thanks for the reminder and the info!

  12. Hi Jodi, I hope so too! I think it would be great for the girls and good for the country.

Hi Mr. Brown Thumb, probably! I wouldn't want to be the person who finds out!

Hi Rose, wasn't it cute! and informative too!

I'm SO looking forward to green beans fresh from the garden! Yum!

Glad you enjoyed the video Tyra! I couldn't agree more.

Hi Jan, that would be great! I hear your new neighbor likes pie. . . that might be a nice housewarming gift and might provide a little more gentle persuasion!
