Late Summer at Lake Katherine

We had lots of good family times this week with the Middle One visiting from DC. Her paternal grandma lives not far from Lake Katherine. On Labor Day after driving her to Grandma's for a cookout, I borrowed the Little Guy from my youngest daughter. We headed to Lake Katherine for some fresh air, sunshine, and exercise on what was a beautiful late-summer day.

I've volunteered there a couple of times this season, but didn't have time to take any photos. It looks quite different there now than it did back in March!

I've done a slide show again since there seemed too many photos to cram into this post. Enjoy!

  3. Looks like you had a ("Look at me! Watch me!") good time! :) Do you really like beets? Cause I love them and none of my friends do, not even the foodies! I also adore garlic chives--so yummy!--and have let mine go to flower now. I do love the flowers and I'm going to collect seeds, too.

  4. RE your comment over at MBT about baptisia seedlings...They don't like being moved and they take a long time to bloom for the first time, but they are pretty hardy. If their roots look fairly defined, I would personally plant them outside now so they can acclimate as it gets colder. And I have baptisia seeds if that should fail and you want to blame it on me! LOL! :)

  6. Glad you enjoyed it Stephanie! I like having a place like Lake Katherine nearby.

It was a joy Carolyn! It's so much fun spending time with the Little Guy!

Exactly right Monica! He loves being the center of attention! And yes, I really do love beets - one of my favorite veggies! (They're good grilled too! ;)

Since the seeds were free there's nothing lost but a little time if they don't make it, and they might be happier outdoors. I'm not sure if they need chilling over the winter. I did successfully overwinter a few very small hydrangea cuttings indoors last year, but they might have been just as happy outside.

The baptisias are so small - some don't even have their first true leaves yet. Some have a few. I still have more seeds, but was hoping to get a jump on their growth (and bloom of course,) by starting them after they were harvested. I'm figuring on at least two or three years before they bloom.

I could always try planting a few out and overwintering a few indoors. I like to experiment anyway.

  11. Looks like a wonderful place to visit, all the more special with your little guy! You've made me realize I need to get out and visit a couple favorite places near here before it's too late--thanks!

I planted my first beets ever this year, but we haven't eaten any yet--I'm a beet lover, too:)

  13. Glad you enjoyed it Joy! It's a nice time of year to visit Lake Katherine - everything was so pretty, and the light was gorgeous.

It's a completely different experience with the Little Guy Rose - less peaceful, but more lively and fun, and more social. I usually keep to myself, but he makes friends with everyone we come across. Mmmm. . . those beets will be delicious - enjoy! I love them prepared any way, and especially grilled or roasted.

Thanks MBT! I love the arbor too - almost talked the Lawn Man into one over the short path between the garden a lawn a couple of years ago, but he decided he didn't want his view of the lawn blocked. ;)

  18. Meems, the little guy is quite a nature lover, and it was really fun seeing LK through his eyes.

Avis, I think you'd enjoy LK.

Tina, I'm seriously thinking about planting some garlic chives.

I know exactly what you mean Gail, being shade-challenged here too.

I'm glad you all enjoyed LK!
