Garden Visitors

It's raining today. again! Our swale has rarely been dry this spring, thanks to the torrential rainfalls we've had. We've been lucky having had just a little seepage in the basement, while others in our area have suffered some pretty severe flooding. Thanks to all the rain, the gardens have been very happy. We've also had frequent visitors to the garden, thanks to all the rain. Most notable among the welcome visitors have been Ed and Zelda. We've also had mosquitoes in record numbers, but that's a story for another day.

A few weeks ago, Ed arrived without Zelda. When they're here together they take a relaxed swim, then often come out and onto the lawn for a nice rest before heading out again. This time Ed was here alone. He seemed to be looking for Zelda the whole time, and didn't stay as long as usual. I hoped she was ok.

Ah, there she is, and all is right again in Ed's world.

  1. Glad you've had rain...and that it hasn't flooded your basement! It seems Ed and Zelda really appreciate your swale! Ed's a real beauty! Maybe you'll see babies at some point? Hopefully there's another pond nearby in case your swale dries up;-)

  2. Quite a handsome lad...that Ed. They do enjoy their water spots. Some visit the pond next door and often come into our yard.

  3. They do seem to enjoy the swale Jan. They're finding stuff to eat in there too - hopefully mosquito larvae!

Male mallards are so darned pretty! So far they've never brought babies here. Maybe if the swale was bigger, or if it stayed wet all the time they might decide to nest here.

Glad you get to enjoy your own Eds and Zeldas Balisha. It's always a treat when they show up!

  6. It's kind of fun having a temporary 'water feature' here Gail. This year it hasn't been so temporary!

They're really fun to watch Rose! I hope we'll see some toads and frogs too - it's been a couple of years since they've hopped from the swale into the garden.

  9. I was happy to see Zelda return Victoria, and Ed seems happier too.

I do enjoy their short visits Danielle, and their absences probably do serve to make my heart grow fonder when they do honor us with a visit.

Glad you got the seeds, and hope they grow well for you. If not let me know and I'll send more.

  13. How cool! I wish a duck or two would visit my garden, if only for a little while. When I was a kid we got some ducklings that I raised and then they flew away never to be seen again. Now I'm wondering whatever became of them.

  14. That must have been so fun MBT! A few days ago I had to stop on my way somewhere and wait for a Mallard family to cross the street. The ducklings were SO cute!

Hopefully your ducks found a nice pond or lagoon to hang out in, and maybe even raised some ducklings of their own. :)
