Once in a Blue Moon

Just after midnight New Year's morning, George heard nature's call and we headed outdoors. As you may imagine, I was a bit grumbly, since it was only about 4 degrees F, and outdoors was not where I wanted to be.

The grumbliness quickly lifted. The night was truly magical. I came back in for the camera. Without adjusting for the low light, the shutter clicked a few times before we headed back in, where a lovely glass of champagne and a warm afghan were waiting.

Thank you George, I'm glad we didn't miss it.

  2. The blue moon was really something special; I'm glad the snow had finally stopped and we were able to see it! Your pictures captured it beautifully!

  5. Thanks Debbie!

It was Balisha. Hope you have a very healthy, happy 2010 and beyond.

Wasn't it fantastic Rose! The photos don't do justice to the light that night. I'm glad the sky was cloudless.

Thank you Frances! A very happy 2010 to you!

It was an all-around romantic evening. We always stay home on New Year's Eve and commemorate our first NYE together, which was one day after we met seven years ago. I knew that New Year's Eve I wanted to be with this man the rest of my life.

It truly was Gail. Thank you!

Good to see you back - hope you're not overdoing it. I hope you're feeling much better and healing well.

  7. It sure was pretty, wasn't it? In order to get a clear shot of it, I'd have to wait until it was right overhead or the pines would block out it's beauty. I did get a new camera for Christmas so I suppose I could have snapped a shot too. I hate going out in the winter though, too cold...

  8. Hi Bangchik, I wasn't expecting to see things looking so blue. It was splendid!

It sure was Cindy! Congrats on your new camera! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with it, especially when spring finally arrives. It's already been a long, cold, snowy winter. We got close to a foot of snow in the last 2 days.

  9. Oh, Linda, You've captured that beautiful moon so well. I've never been able to do it justice with my camera. But I sat outside and stared at it for so many nights last week (our weather was quite mild then- ha!). Happy New Year to you and yours.

  10. Aw, what wonderful photos! Looks like a wonderful evening. Now, technically, a blue moon is the second full moon in a month... though astronomers are debating that because of how we interpret the calendar (and, probably, because they don't have a whole lot else to do). Um, sorry, but you know I was an editor and my best friend teaches astronomy... :)

  11. It was a beautiful moon! Great photos, Linda. Sophie made sure I didn't miss it, either:)

  12. Thank you Meems! I'm envious of your mild weather. My middle daughter was down in Miami and the Keys for a week around New Year's - it was a welcome relief I'm sure after being in frigid Chicago for Christmas!

It was lovely Monica. I didn't expect it to actually be blue out there.

I didn't do the astronomical explanation of a 'blue' moon - being on New Year's Eve this time, I was feeling more celebratory than technical. It was a cool way for the decade to end, wasn't it!

Thank you Rose! It was awfully sweet of Sophie to insist you got out there to see the beautiful sight! ;)

  13. It looks like it was worth the cold to see! We had very cloudy weather that night so didn't get to see it.

I can't believe I missed the blue moon! I wrote it down after I saw that funny astronomer fellow on one of the public access shows mention it, but then lost the scrap of paper.

    Oh well, maybe next time.

Oh so beautiful! I missed that scene!

  16. I saw it too. That's something you don't want to miss. A blue moon on New Years only occurs once every 20 years.

We had a lovely crescent moon last night.

  17. Hi Catherine, it was definitely worth the cold, and I'm glad George dragged me out, even if it was 'kicking and screaming' initially.

    Sorry you missed it MBT!

Magical is a good word for it Esther!

Kanak, if not for George, I'd have missed it too.

Marnie, it was worth braving the cold to see it. I missed the crescent moon last night.

  18. That last picture really looks magical.

  19. Glad you enjoyed it Victoria! If I'd taken more time out in the cold it would have been clearer. As it turned out, I really like the painterly quality of it - a happy accident!

  20. Those are lovely photos, especially since the light was so low. I stayed inside and viewed the blue moon thru the window. What a sissy, huh?

I have been noticing the pretty crescent moon the last few nights. Our skies have been so clear it shows up well.

  21. Thank you Marnie! If not for George, I would have viewed it from the warmth of indoors too. I'm not a fan of arctic temps either.
