Hot Town, Summer in the City

On the way to the IGC Trade Show last Tuesday, Michigan Avenue was calling me. I spent a few moments at the Art Institute north garden and the Lurie, and both were dressed in their August finery. Hope you enjoy this Lovin' Spoonful of summer in the city.

  1. The slide show was wonderful. It gives the false impression that Chicago actually had a "summer" this year! Then the seedheads. It feels very weird this year, fall is in the air definately, but summer was a fleeting moment.

  2. Gorgeous, Linda. We really are the "city in a garden. "

  3. Glad you enjoyed the slides Debbie. "Hot" definitely doesn't describe the Chicago-area's weather this summer! It has been an odd summer weather-wise. I've been loving it though, since I'm not a fan of hot weather.

Thank you Carolyn. The Lurie was gorgeous, and there were lots of folks enjoying Millennium Park and the Art Institute garden while I was there. Chicago definitely lives up to it's motto.

  4. Hi Linda, thanks for showing the photos--it's great to see the city this time of year. Hey, I was a few miles of your home on Sunday, driving back home from St Louis, via Champaign-Urbana. Heading north on 57, I saw an overpass with the street name the same as your town name and looking it up on the map later, yep, I was close! (Did you see me wave?) I was also excited to see street plantings in St Louis and you totally, totally have to get yourself to MOBOT! :)

  5. Hi Monica, yep, you were very close! Maybe that's what George was barking about on Sunday! ;) You would have been welcome to stop by for a visit. I've been taking advantage of the cool weather and moving stuff around in the garden. It's starting to feel less like a disorganized plant collection and more like a garden.

Glad you enjoyed MOBOT. After the IGC show I'm very tempted to head down to Bakersville, and St. Louis would be a good place to stop on the way. I've been to St. Louis many times. Mom grew up there, and my grandparents moved back there from the Ozarks in their retirement.

Thanks for the postcard from MOBOT!

  8. The gardens were lovely Dawn. I think they've been enjoying the cooler weather as much as I have!

Glad you enjoyed the slides Bangchik and Kakdah!

  10. LOL Gail! Yep, it was quite the gardening fashion plate last week!

Those alliums had me in May. Now seeing the wonderful seedheads, I'm sure I'll be digging some alliums into the garden this fall.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the alliums' foliage looking so nice after reading what several bloggers had to say about hiding their foliage behind daylilies. The foliage wasn't fancy, but it was still clean and fresh. I think I'd prefer to hide the tattered daylily foliage behind the alliums. :)

  11. Glad you got the postie! I really liked St Louis! I was tempted to stop by but two main reasons stopped me: 1) I hate dropping in on people unannounced and I didn't realize until we passed by just how close I was to you and 2) Carole would have probably rather killed me than to make another stop (she was really eager to get home!). ;-) If you do go to MOBOT, let me know--maybe if I got myself to you, we could carpool the rest of the way.

  13. Monica, well, now you know for next time how close we are to the expressway, and you're welcome anytime. I'll definitely let you know if I decide to take a trip to MO!

    Me too Rose!

Each of those beds is really packed full of plants. I can see why you would be sidetracked. I did enjoy the Lovin' Spoonful ;)

  18. Nice pics. I should've stopped by myself but didn't think about it. The toad lilies are awesome. You reminded me I bought a number of them a couple of years back. I wonder what the heck happened to them.

I've got the biggest urge to talk a walk in that area with a couple of plastic baggies and watch as seed heads just happen to fall into them.

  19. Thanks for sharing this wonderful slide show, Linda! After being so taken with the Lurie Garden at Spring Fling, it was great to see what it looks like now. All those seedheads--it must be alive with birds and butterflies right now. While we were in Chicago for Spring Fling, I was so impressed with all the street plantings, but didn't think to take a single photo. You've got some lovely ones here; Chicago is a beautiful city!

  20. Glad you enjoyed it Layanee - sure looks different than in May! I hope to get back there to see how the gardens look in the fall.

Thanks MBT. I planted some toad lilies last year. They're back this year, but not doing much and I don't think they'll bloom. After all the rain we've had the last few days the slugs are having a field day with the toad lilies.

You're welcome Rose! I was very happy to see how the Lurie has evolved over the summer. There were lots of birds, butterflies, and pollinators all over the garden. The medians, parkways, and planters were really beautiful.
